At the base-level, Premium, and Limited trim levels, Subaru installs a 2.0-liter turbocharged flat-four engine, which produces 268 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. If you go with the STI or STI Limited, Subaru provides a larger, 2.5-liter turbocharged flat-four instead; it has an output of 310 horsepower and 290 pound-feet of torque under the hood. Each engine is paired with a 6-speed manual transmission, with incline start assist added on the STI trim level to ensure a safe ride up a hill after starting the vehicle.

Although all-wheel drive (AWD) is standard on the 2020 WRX, a continuous AWD system is standard on the non-STI trims. If you go with an STI model, Subaru provides a driver-controlled center differential AWD system, which distributes torque evenly between the front and rear axles to optimize traction and handling. Ultimately, due to their varying configurations, the STI models yield a fuel economy of 16/22 mpg and the non-STI models yield a fuel economy of 21/27 mpg.

As a compact four-door sedan, the 2020 Subaru WRX provides two cloth-trimmed rows of seats for up to five people. Passenger volume is measured at 96.6 cubic feet on the base-level and STI trims and 93.1 cubic feet on the Premium, Limited, and STI Limited. Cargo volume is measured at 12 cubic feet. Also standard in the cabin are performance-oriented front seats, a 6-way manually adjustable driver's seat, a leather-wrapped flat-bottomed steering wheel with red stitching, aluminum pedal covers, and a 60/40 split-folding design on the rear seats to expand cargo volume.

Upgrading to the Premium level adds front-seat heating on the WRX. Leather upholstery replaces cloth at the Limited trim level, with the STI models getting upgraded Ultrasuede leather-trimmed seats. Only the STI Limited gets 8-way power on the driver's seat; unique to the regular Limited is 10-way on the driver's side instead.

For comfort and convenience, the 2020 Subaru WRX gets features such as electronic cruise control, a multifunction display with an analog instrument cluster and sport-oriented electroluminescent gauges, Bluetooth, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay for smartphone integration, six-speaker stereo with AM/FM radio and a single-slot CD player, HD Radio, a few months of SiriusXM Radio, dual USB ports and an auxiliary audio jack for playing media from or charging portable devices, Subaru Starlink infotainment integration, and a 6.5-inch high-resolution LCD touchscreen.

At the Premium trim level, the WRX gets an infotainment boost with the addition of HD Radio technology, a trial subscription to SiriusXM Travel Link, and a larger, 7-inch high-resolution LCD touchscreen in place of the 6.5-inch one. If you go with the Limited or higher in New London, Subaru provides keyless access with push-button engine start. Dual-zone automatic climate control appears at the STI level. And features unique to the STI Limited are a trial subscription to SiriusXM Traffic, 7-inch touchscreen navigation with voice-activated technology, and a nine-speaker Harman Kardon stereo system.

Restraint and cushioning on the 2020 Subaru WRX is provided by a driver's knee airbag, two frontal impact airbags, two front seat-mounted side-impact airbags, and two roof-mounted side curtain airbags. Also standard in terms of safety are a rearview camera, active torque vectoring, vehicle dynamics control, a traction control system, an anti-lock braking system, brake assist, brake override, daytime running lights, and a theft-deterrent system.

Starting from the Limited trim level, the WRX also has the Starlink Safety and Security suite, which includes functions such as automatic collision notification, SOS emergency assistance, roadside assistance, stolen vehicle recovery, and remote functionality. Larger, Brembo performance-oriented disc brakes go on the STI models.

Trim Options

Performance: On the Premium and Limited, you have a choice of going with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) called Sport Lineatronic. This CVT includes 6- and 8-speed manual modes for greater control over gear shifting. Choosing the CVT enables the use of a variable torque distribution AWD system, which has more of a rear-wheel tilt to reduce understeer. Also optional on either of these trims is Subaru Intelligent Drive, or SI-DRIVE, technology, for providing a trio of driver-selectable modes tailored to suit various driving conditions or moods.

Interior: On the Premium and STI, you can go with Recaro performance seats, with 8-way power on the driver's side. The Premium offers Ultrasuede leather-trimmed upholstery is optional.

Technology: Only the Limited offers Starlink 7-inch touchscreen navigation and Harman Kardon stereo systems as an option.

Safety: The Premium and Limited offer the option of EyeSight, which is a suite of driver-assistance safety features that includes adaptive cruise control for maintaining a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you, pre-collision braking for avoiding a potential crash, lane departure warning to alert you when you cross your lane markings without signaling, and sway warning to suggest taking a rest during long trims. Notably, EyeSight is standard if you equip the Premium or Limited with the CVT.

The Limited stands further apart from the other trims by also offering high beam, reversing automatic braking, and the combination of blind-spot detection, lane change assist, and rear cross-traffic alert to assist you with monitoring the WRX's rear and side areas. Not to be outdone, the Premium is the only trim that offers the previously mentioned Brembo brakes as an option.
